Yafan Huang

About Me

I recevied my Ph.D. from Computer Science at the University of Iowa (2021 - 2026), where I was advised by Guanpeng Li. I was also a visiting graduate student in Argonne National Laboratory advised by Sheng Di and Franck Cappello (2021 - 2026). Before coming to UIowa, I earned my Master’s degree in Computer Science from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (2018 - 2021) , and my Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering from Hunan University (2014 - 2018).

My research generally lies in High-Performance Computing (HPC), with specific focuses on:

• AI and HPC Co-design: HPC for Machine Learning System, LLM Inference for HPC
• Data Compression: GPU Compression, In-situ Compression, Compression for Science
• Fault Tolerance: HPC Resilience, AI Resilience, Software-directed Fault Tolerance
• Parallel Computing: Massive Parallelism, Parallel Reduction, Data-flow Architecture
• Compiler Optimization: Program Analysis, Code Transformation, IR Optimization

My research for HPC and AI has been recognized with the 2025 ACM-IEEE CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowship, 2026 MLCommons ML and Systems Rising Star, and nominations (or awards) for Best Paper or Best Student Paper at SC’22, SC’24, ICS’25, LDAV’25.

I developed and currently maintain cuSZp, an ultra-fast GPU compression framework designed to tackle big data challenges with high-speed requirements. If you’re working with large-scale data and need efficient compression, please feel free to explore the GitHub repository and give it a try!

I will be joining Department of Computer Science at University of Maryland, College Park as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor starting from Fall 2026. I am looking for self-motivated PhD students in HPC and AI systems in Fall 2027 admission cycle. Interested students are welcome to contact me with their CV and some topics listed above.
